From the Editor:
Happy New Year to all! While the dot-coms continue to fall
and fail, I take great pride in saying "I told you so". For
those who used their millions of dollars to advertise in
all the big name mags and on the biggest sites, now that
you're verified flops, the truth is you should have taken the
cut-rate killer deals Underground offered you. Oh well, like
who needs a job anyway, right? Suffer.
To those still in town, Underground is the cheapest way to
reach your audiences if you're after the new-music-arts
kinda person, after 19 long years I just might know a thing
or two about doing things without lotsa (or any) moola.

Hi everyone --
MACHA is composed of 4 guys that blend indie music with an
eastern twist -- they are incredible. Do whatever you can to
get your hands on "See it Another Way" or the self titled
album. I turned Brian Eno on to these guys and he was blown
away. Truly the best band in Athens at the moment -- my
fiancee from Widespread Panic agrees. Macha is usually
played at every setbreak of every W.P. show.
Their instrumentation is some of the best I've heard.
Brian said he's never heard such an eclectic blending of
instruments.
Check them out! You can download some of their songs from
certain MP3 sites.
Thanks for your time -- just trying to spread the word!
Cheers from Athens and London,
Jennifer

venture the dreaded internet search engines...if you want to

matt borghi here, some of you might know me from my music, or
my work with The Organization of Sound. I've just joined on
with Ambient Visions, http://www.ambientvisions.com, to do
some writing and reviewing. We're looking for a couple of
writers/ reviewers to cover Techno, Trance, Electronica, et.
al. We're looking for serious, dedicated, and thoughtful
proponents of these genres and sub-genres. If you are not
dedicated please don't bother responding. We've been burned in
the past by people who claimed to be reviewers, or writers but
they never sent anything in after the they received the music.
If you think that you might be interested please email us here
at webmaster@ambientvisions.com
Also as a side note if you're an independent artist working in
the Ambient/Space/Atmospheric genre, please send discs for
review to me at the address below. You can also contact me at
mattborghi@prodigy.net. I really want to start working to
promote more indie artists. If you have a CD/CD-R or tape, but
preferably CD, of Ambient/Space/Atmospheric get it to me right
away and we'll get the great reviews coming.

ADHUR : Promo CD (Self released, 13'17', 3 tracks, original
black-metal) : I say the Adhur music is black-metal but I
think the words aren't really good 'cause the music and the
compositions of these 3 songs are very original. Adhur from
Spain and more precisely from Basque Country proposes a kind
of black / pagan-metal with a lot of atmospheres, with many
original instruments (flute, keyboards giving a deep music....)
but also very diversified vocals (black-metal vocals of course
but also vocals that are more death-metal, more dark-metal...).
About the influences, if we except the influences from their
country, it is impossible to identify a band like Adhur. The
band found its way, you must explore it 'cause you propose a
great music ! Continue like this ! (8,5/10) ;
e-mail : adhur_eate@hotmail.com
DEAD 50'S : Standing On The Edge Of Forever (Smorgasbord
Records, 53'00', 10 tracks, punk / metal) : New band signed by
USA's Smorgasbord Records, this pure punk / metal act releases
their second full CD. The 3 guys, forming Dead 50's, play in a
punk / metal musical way in which wee can feel some Therapy
(Ireland's band) touches. In fact, Dead 50's is more punk and
less commercial of course, but some approaches remember to me
the Irish band (The One Thing). Basically, when I saw the
cover, I waited a pure punk CD but finally, with more metal
roots, the Dead 50's music is not too punk, not too metal,
just between both. A great come back and a great second CD.
(8,5/10)
REGURGITATE : Carnivorous Erection (Relapse Records, 33'04',
38 tracks, grind /death-metal) : Are they human ? I don't know
'cause after the listening of this excellent new album, you
ask yourself how can they propose such music ! I was really
satisfied by the re-release of their cult debut CD Effortless
Regurgitation... by Relapse and finally, Regurgitate is back
with a killer CD. Imagine the brutality of old Carcass mixed
with the same sound than Exhumed and with some Repulsion
touches, aaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh, this new album is really
killer, I repeat. Songs like Just Another Stillborn show
that Regurgitate is now one of the best grind acts. Horror,
blood and cannibalism, Sweden's Regurgitate is for you !
(8,5/10)
SATARIAL : The Queen Of The Elves' Land (Beyond Productions,
38'39', 11 tracks, folk black-metal) : Formed in Russia 11
years ago (in 1989), Satarial plays an original black-metal
with folk and gothic influences. The black-metal music is a
traditional black-metal way but very great folk influences
diversified the music. With the uses of flute, violin and
soprano vocals giving a great impact to the music and it is
for this, the musical way played by Satarial is really
original. Folk, black-metal with gothic touches, here are
the words that I can give you to describe this good debut CD.
(7/10)
TALVISOTA : V / A (Woodcut Records, 73'46', 17 tracks, dark
and black-metal) : If you want to know more about the Finnish
black-metal scene, this CD is a due ! The reason is you find
all the best bands from Finland and you understand Finnish
bands only compose this compilation. ...And Oceans, Enochian
Crescent, Thy Serpent or Throes Of Dawn, you'll find all the
best bands with very excellent songs. The best is the price,
mid price CD. Not only released songs, some unreleased songs
are present in the CD (ex : unreleased songs from Horna,
Black Dawn...). Excellent compilation about one of the best
and one of the most original metal scenes. (8/10)
THUNDERBOLT : The Sons Of The Darkness (Apocalypse Production,
42'14', 7 tracks, black-metal) : I am really happy to listen
the debut album from the Polish band Thunderbolt. After their
good split CD with Kataxu (see the review below), this first
CD continues in the same musical way, a musical way
influenced by old Satyricon, Summoning (old ages) by
passages, Nocturnal Mortum but also with more Emperor touches
(The Sons Of The Darkness). If we back in the old roots of
the band, Thunderbolt knew some problems with old members but
finally these problems are now finished and they can propose
something with their full line-up (2 members). It is sure, the
musical vision of these 2 members are a strong, old
black-metal without any new influences as many new bands
(electro sounds....) but we can listen some keyboards giving a
deeper impact to the songs. Old and
traditional black-metal, like in the middle of the 90's, yes,
we like this black-metal music. (7,5/10)
Nitro Europe:
That's right!! The Damned, featuring founding members Dave
Vanian and Captain Sensible along with Patricia Morrison
(Bags, Gun Club, Sisters of Mercy) on Bass, Monty Oxymoron on
Keyboards, and Pinch (English Dogs, Janus Stark) on Drums, are
currently deciding on a producer for their first release on
Nitro Records. The new album, untitled as of yet, is
tentatively scheduled for May of 2001!
Since the release of their debut album "Damned, Damned,
Damned" in 1977, The Damned have epitomized (some say even
created) British punk rock with their catalog of uncommonly
unique records and notorious live shows. They introduced
America to UK punk for the first time with their
groundbreaking US tour in 1977, instantly earning them a firm
spot on a short list of innovators.
Building upon an already extensive list of hits, The Damned
will continue to stretch the boundaries with their first album
on Nitro Records. This current line up promises to be yet
another chapter in an already brilliant story.
Now with The Damned joining the Nitro family along with Son of
Sam, T.S.O.L., and The Turbo A.C.'s, we guarantee some
extraordinary releases coming next year.
JAWAD is curently working on a cover song of the frenchcult
band SUP for a tribute album to be out in 2001. The song
covered is "Chronophobia"
GHOLES ' "Fleur de Soufre" is soon scheduled. The band plays
melodic / atmospheric Death metal. A mix between agression &
melody. The album wll be out in the beginning of 2001. All
medias can already contact me at thundering@musearecords.com
to schedule phoners.
Valgalder Records:

music is unique in all ways, however, this album is highly
recommended for fans of Cradle of Filth, Bal-Sagoth, Beauty of
Enslavement, Old Man's Child, Dimmu Borgir and

It is really good to hear the new CDs from the DSFA bands
(ex-bands) as Orphanage, Trail Of Tears and now Within
Temptation. Basically, I consider the Dutch band as one of
the best bands in the musical style called gothic music with
female vocals and with this new CD (second release of the band),
I confirm my point of view. This new one continues in the same
way than the previous materials but we feel some differences.
First of all, Within Temptation uses more melodies, more
atmospheres (Ice Queen) and some Celtic influences, a better
production giving another dimension and a better vision to the
music. The second difference is now, there are only female
vocals, those of Sharon, and any grunt male vocals as in the
past and I think this little evolution is really great 'cause
we feel a more melodic approach I find. Basically, a pure
masterpiece from Holland, I confirm Within Temptation is one!
of the best bands in the gothic scene. (9/10)
Although they were supposed to have been ready and out by
year's end, the two new webzines I am doing will have to
wait until the first week of 2001, they are
THE UNDERGROUND SOUND - the webzine companion to this ezine
(depending on where you read this, the ezine may be in html
also, but originally and still I send it via email in straight
text) will feature a look at how the music mafia works, how
it controls and corrupts the government, and what you can do
to give the laggers the boot. As the webzine enters it's
seventh year, I can honestly say it has been a helluva lot
of work, without regards, but at least it still retains
the original idea: new and indie rock with a hint of
satire.
ELECTROID - first issue originally supposed to have appeared
in late 1999, but so what it is almost finally ready. The
first issue is not fancy on the layout, yet will have ALOT
of info and linkings to the party scene. A not-to-miss
for dancin' fools 'n' freaks.
Some ask why I do more than one zine....the Underground
Sound webzine is a cross-genre publications, yet there is
so much out there the other six zines I do are more direct
in their subject matter. Yes it is too much for one man,
but it's rock n roll, and all that is too much for anyone,
so get over it. You losers with large staffs of web-
developers with fancy tools and nice computers may think
you are better, with big budgets and "industry" reputations..
Doesn't mean a rat's ass to me. You are pitiful, not
even being able to continually outdo one mad-dog with your
money and staffs. I take big crap on you and continue the
fight.
ROCK ON!

**ALBUM OF THE YEAR**
NOMEANSNO No One (Alternative Tentacles)
You simply just have to be impressed with a band whose three
members all look like they're older than most witnesses of
the big bang and still put out a brand of progressive punk
rock that is far more intense than nearly anything else
being released these days. Still Canada's best kept secret
and most underappreciated export, NoMeansNo is now twenty
years into their musical explorations and having had No Means
No One (or perhaps simply One) on constant repeat play since
receiving it in the mail, I can say with great conviction that
this album is easily one of the best - if not the best -
NoMeansNo albums to date.
As has been the tendency since 1993's Why Do They Call Me Mr.
Happy?, the band is hell bent on their epic songs with One.
With the exception of the cover of Ramones' "Beat on the
Brat", every single one of these songs clocks in near or well
above the six minute mark. Best yet, all of the songs are so
craftily structured and written that you will not tire of them
at all. By and large the epic songs should cement the fact
that although the band travels in and is embraced by punk
circles, they are well beyond the typical connotation of what
punk music should be. Best yet, the performances of the
members, particularly drummer John Wright, are very much their
strongest yet. I rather can picture musicians worldwide
throwing their instruments down in disgust, realizing how
much more practice they need, after listening to this album
in full. The production is definitely the best the band has
received, finally giving the studio output the sound that you
would hear in a live setting (which is where this band still
is at their best). So given all that, you have the all the
necessary elements to put together the strongest NoMeansNo
album of all.
"The Graveyard Shift" starts out One with one of the most
infectious and stirring bass lines and guitar harmony that
the band has ever written. The narrative of the song more
or less sets the stage for how the rest of the album follows.
Rob's vocals and lyrics are incredible throughout. "Our Town"
is a grinding and chilling look at urban reality that quite
possibly is the most blatantly real observation on city life
that I've heard. "A Little Too High" is one of the most manic
numbers NoMeansNo has come up with, offering an extremely
avant performance from the band and Rob giving one of his
more schizoid vocalizations yet. The lyrics here are bleak
and disturbing, as well as brimming with strong imagery that
is seldom found anywhere else. "The Phone Call" is another
disturbing song about a telephone stalker losing his marbles.
And quite possibly the most impressive song on the album is
the fifteen minute long cover of Miles Davis' "Bitch's Brew".
You never would have thunk that perhaps he wrote this song
with NoMeansNo in mind, but their take on it is extremely
wonderful. Any preconceptions on what a punk band is
supposedly able to perform should be tossed out the window.
Everyone can tell there is something very wrong with the
music industry, same bands, same songs, same labels every -
where. Sure, the fat cats in the industry say that's because
those bands are the best, and all of us "others" just aren't
good enough to be "signed" to a major label.
THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT!
The Music Industry Mafia uses things such as compulsory
licensing, payola and other forms of racketeering to make
sure the media and music outlets have their stuff out front,
and in many cases, the ONLY stuff you'll hear or see...
It's true, and it is the biggest embarrassment of law
enforcement in the US, and a shame everyone is so spoofed
by this mafia.

I must find someone in any of the following bands, or labels.
If you know these people or know of how to get in touch with
them, please let me know ASAP. All of these bands or labels
have either abandoned product at Underground Records which
came back either unclaimed through the mail, or their payments
came back from addresses gone bad. I very much would like to
get them their stuff back. Anyone who's thinking they'll scam
and "claim" to be these people so I'll send them the stuff,
anything sent back will have to be signed for and the shipping
paid by the receiver (I have already spent tons trying to ship
this stuff back and lots more than it's worth on checks that
came back that could not be redeemed at full value). If goods
are not claimed by February 2001 they will be disposed of. I
can be contacted at 770-769-9126 or at the address listed in
the heading section of this zine.
