Article 5. NEWS FROM WORLD DOMINATION
We here at World Domination are pleased to announce that we have entered
into an agreement with the UK label Swim. Based in London, Swim is owned
and run by original Wire member Colin Newman and ex-Minimal Compact bassist
Malka Spigel. The roster includes the jazzy break beats of Ronnie and
Clyde, the hard floor/techno of former LFO member Gez Varley operating as
G-Man, Cusp featuring Mark Gage/DJ Vapourspace, Japanese groovemeister
dol-lop, as well as Colin and Malka's outfit Immersion and their own solo
output.
The first USA domestic release from Swim on July 8th is the double cd (for
the price of one) Water Communication, a compilation featuring all the Swim
acts. July 29th sees the release of Colin Newman's solo album Bastard,
followed Aug 12th by Malka Spigel's mini album Hide. There will be more,
much more.......!
Under the same deal we will be releasing WMO a label that releases all
things Wire. In August we will release domestically for the first time E
Graham Lewis' H.A.L.O. Immanent and the new He Said Omala, Catch Supposes
cds. In October expect Wire Coatings, the first collection of unreleased
Wire circa 1985-90. Also due is Dugga Dugga Dugga with an eclectic
selection of artists covering Wire's Drill - please send your versions for
consideration!!
In other news, Loop Guru release the first single form their current album
Amrita. Entitled Sheik it includes four previously unreleased tracks. Look
for their new video which will be aired on MTV's AMP any day now, plus we
will announce tour dates very soon. As a reminder Loop Guru's cd Catalogue
of Desires is still available direct from the web,

at import prices!! For $10 you get the cd in a special box along with
photos, stickers and a cassette......a bargain. You can also order it by

Perfume Tree are in the studio working on the follow up to their current
album A Lifetime Away and on Sept 9th will release an ep entitled Tide's
Out.
Sugar Plant are back in Japan after a very successful 6 week jaunt around
the USA and are beginning work on the follow up to After After Hours. In
the fall we will release their very groovy Trance Mellow ep.
Kristeen Young continues to tour in support of her World Domination debut
Meet Miss Young and her All Boy Band.
And on July 29th we release the debut cd Cascade from Richmond, VA's
Malacoda. Cascade is a fabulous musical excursion and was recorded and
mixed by Ian Caple who recorded Tricky's Pre-Millenium Tension, to mention
one of the many cool albums that Ian's recorded!

Article 9. SKYDIGGERS - Desmond's Hip City
For Immediate Release
DROG is pleased to announce that the new Skydigger's CD, Desmond's
Hip City, will be released on July 2nd. This is a co-venture between
the Skydiggers new label, Hip City City Records and DROG. Canadian
distribution through Outside Music. Bobby Gale will be handling the
radio promotion and publicity. The first single "Only A Fool" is
at radio now.
The Skydiggers have a long history in an around Guelph that's starts
with their first ever "gig out of town" at the Albion. Somewhere between
the Save The Rails benefit and Hillside Music Festival they met with
Lewis Melville (pedal steel) who along with his brother Tom (piano)
joined in on their first self titled GOLD record. Lewis went on to tour
and played with the band for several years. As well, the Skydiggers
have on occasion stopped by our recording studio to cut demos and
eat Lew's famous soups.

Review: Keep Surfin, Boyz!
Band: Insect Surfers

I saw the Insect Surfers in D.C. way back in 1982, on a bill with
the Slickee Boys, an excellent D.C.-area surf punk band (which
still does annual reunions, BTW). Then again at the closing of
the old 9:30 Club in D.C. on the last Friday the ol' club was
open: Dec. 29, 1995 (with a more than a few shows in-between that
13 year span, of course). One of my treasured relics from the
old 9:30, in fact, is a cocktail napkin with a surfing mantis
that David Arnson, the lead singer, made out to me. Very nifty.
In the old days, the Insect Surfers, who hailed, I believe from
Arlington, VA, were a singing band. Now, they are part of what
is a fairly new genre to me: "Instro". In other words, they
don't sing-- except for an occasional 'Whooooo!' or sampled vocal
bit. I ran into David in L.A. recently. I was surprised to
learn that the Insect Surfers moved out to L.A. about 10 years
ago. We reminisced about the "old days", and he gave me his new
CD to review, which I am very happy to do. It is very cewl to
have Insect Surfers in L.A., let me tell you. And somehow, a
surf punk band is more appropriate out here. (The Beach Boys
were from here, for cryin out loud). Now, on to the present
review: as I mentioned, this CD is nearly purely instrumental.
While the "instro" genre for me is not quite as "meaty" as vocal
music, (I like to sing along in my car, what can I say: something
has to get you through the L.A. traffic!), this stuff is wonderful.
Surf punk has always been the perfect party music: reliably
upbeat and eternally fun. Endless summer, indeed! It is also the
ideal music for many other situations that require nice background
music, in which vocals could be interfering. Such as a meeting
or a social gathering with people conversing. Or, when you are
writing/studying/ruminating and need a less-invasive CD in order
to concentrate. Musically, this CD is world class: the players
play well and artfully. The instrumentation is comfortable and
confident. The cuts are multi-layered and musically complex
enough to keep your interest. With the absence of vocals, the
instruments take the place of voices, and the lead guitar is a
fine substitute for lead vocal. Or, in one cut, a nice fat-
sounding sexy sax. Oh, yeah. The last track combines a lead
guitar and sax in a very fine harmony, ending in a baby-saxes-
gone-wild bit which sounds like several lil pterodactyls breaking
out of the shell and taking off in flight for the first time.
(Well, what can I say--this genre is more conducive to visual
imagery than more obvious in-your-face styles of music). Song
structure differs from the standard Verse Chorus Verse format,
with themes evolving and following a natural progression rather
than using repetition as a device. A few effects
(reverb/flanging/phasing/echo) and odd instruments are thrown in
for variety, including mandolin, sax, and something called a
bouzouki. This CD will round out your musical collection nicely.
The Insect Surfers are: David Arnson & Dan Sullivan on guitar,
Dan Valentie (bass), and Jeff Utterback on drums. A couple of
other contributors on individual tracks: Davie Allan, Mike
O'Neil, and Steve Bidrowski. (Someone named Biz is credited with
playing rattlesnake on the cut "Diamondback", I think this is one
of those shaky percussion thing-a-majigs. Did I mention I ate
rattlesnake road kill once? We used to scoot the live ones off
the road. Those timber rattlers are pretty mean-spirited
suckers. Little did they know we were trying to save their thin
hides). The Insect Surfers do shows in the L.A. area, and
occasionally I believe, elsewhere. A very fun live band, take it

organ pipes, if I am not mistaken, very psychedelic, Dude!

in D.C., write and tell me your story. Let me know if you were a
one-timer, a "regular", what years you attended the 9:30, what
bands you saw, people you knew, any stories at all. I am
particularly interested in how formative the 9:30 Club was for you
and for music in the region).

Review: Tasty Drum 'n Bass!

One of the pleasures of receiving demos to review is the unknown
element: you have no idea what you are going to get musically.
Occasionally, you get to hear music you are not totally familiar
with, or new styles and trends as they are developing. I
received this tape to review, and was very pleasantly surprised.
This is a new genre for me: Drum 'n Bass. I have heard of it, of
course, having some familiarity with most of the permutations of
techno: from jungle to gabber. The trick with this type of
music, as with techno in general, is to use repetition to grab
the listener but simultaneously change and evolve the music
interestingly in one fluid development. This tape treads that
thin line beautifully. This stuff is probably closest to the
jungle genre of techno, but obviously, with a minimum of
instruments. Prior to actually hearing this, I wondered if
merely a drum and a bass could fill the "song space"
sufficiently. Well, if this tape is reflective of the genre in
general, it is not strictly drum 'n bass-- first of all, the
"bass" does not mean a bass guitar, it is actually what is
probably best described as "bass effects". Secondly, there is a
nice layering of sampled bits, including vocals. Don't forget,
also, that drums are multi-tiered, with kick drum, snares, and
many other percussion sounds. The sound result is smooth and
sleek like a black panther. That imagery is somewhat
intentional: there is a definite afro-American-element to the
music: sometimes jazzy, sometimes reggae, sometimes hip-hop, but
whichever way the breeze blows the sound produced is pleasantly
warm/cool or cool/warm like night in a steamy jungle. More
instrumentation would seem excessive. Drum n' bass as a style
ranges from high energy madness to calm and easy. This
particular tape is fairly intermediate, but definitely leans
towards the easy groove. Energized easy, you could say. I tried
this tape with my headset and definitely recommend that method of
listening to it. Also, though, this is the perfect tape for--
uh, romance. Great late night music.
The 'Newsletter' that accompanied the tape was somewhat
confusing: there is a tape listed called Hard Factor 4: Wardance-
- KPAKPO. I was able to gather that KPAKPO is the DJ. But I am
not sure if this tape is the same as the one in the flyer because
the subtitle is different. I am going try to call to clear up
the question before this goes to press-- but I am sure you can
wing it yourselves if you are interested. The production company
is called "Substitution", a team of international DJs and MCs.
