THIS MONTH'S TOP SPOT - MUDVILLE
About the Artists
Mudville is the epitome of future past, combining an ultra-modern
electronic aesthetic with the vibe of vintage soul music. Think
Curtis Mayfield´s weighty grooves, P.J. Harvey´s avant-blues passion,
Jeff Buckley´s soaring, jazzy laments and the futurist soundscapes
of Dan the Automator. Producer/bassist Ben Rubin skillfully combines
fresh production (beats, samples, synths) with old-school instruments
(double bass, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond B3 organ, horns) to
create earthy, idiosyncratic music that spotlights songwriter/vocalist
Marilyn Carino´s keen prose and expansive wail. Her strange, fearless
voice is muse for Rubin´s unsettling yet compelling blend of churning
beats and lush symphonic arrangements. The resulting songs are
impassioned, humanistic inner monologues - gripping and unsentimental
reflections on the precarious nature of love and life in an injured
society.
Homegrown New Yorkers Carino and Rubin met via classified ad during a
years-long stint in San Francisco. Carino was a sweet crooner and
guitarist in traditional bluegrass and alt-country bands, recording
with such notables as Billy Talbot, bassist of Neil Young & Crazy
Horse (who co-produced a track on Mudville´s 2002 EP) and Matt Piucci
of Rain Parade. Rubin, who has remixed tracks for Wu-Tang Clan´s Killah
Priest, Guster, Marshall Crenshaw and others and has toured North
America with Crenshaw, Kate Fenner, Jason Collett (of Broken Social
Scene) and downtown saxophonist Michael Blake, was an upright bassist
in San Francisco´s vibrant jazz scene. In 1995 the duo formed Long
Island Lulu, a deviant soul-rock band whose eponymous 1998 CD was
released to critical praise.
After regrouping in Brooklyn in 2000, Long Island Lulu evolved into
Mudville, with Rubin producing their self-titled four-song EP (Slurry
Records, 2002). In 2004, Mudville completed their full-length LP "The
Glory of Man is not in Vogue". Ben Rubin is currently touring with BB
King.
About the Album
This full-length release, which features such luminaries as saxophonist
Seamus Blake, guitarist Jim Campilongo and guitarist Avi Bortnick (John
Scofield Band) will be distributed world-wide by Day By Day Entertainment
in March 2005.

"CIA" JOB OPENING
The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all the background
checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists...
2 men and a woman.
For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large
metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow
your instructions, no matter what the circumstances. Inside this
room, you will find your wife sitting in a chair. "Kill her!!!" The
man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife." The
agent said, "Then you're not the right man for this job. Take your
wife and go home."
The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and
went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. Then the
man came out with tears in his eyes. "I tried, but I can't kill my
wife." The agent said, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife
and go home."
Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same
instructions to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the
room. Shots were heard, one shot after another. They heard
screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all
was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman. She
wiped the sweat from her brow. "This gun is loaded with blanks", she
said. "I had to beat him to death with the chair."
Moral: Women are evil. Don't mess with them.

North Carolina 's Glass Casket are currently penning new material
for their sophomore album, to be recorded late-2005! The band will
continue writing new material and playing shows throughout the
first part of the year.
Philly hardcore legends TURMOIL rock Europe and record new material!
As part of their upcoming retrospective release on Abacus Recordings,
Turmoil will be heading into the studio in March to record three brand
new songs. The new songs will be recorded at Water Studio's in Hoboken
NJ with producer Ted Young ( Lamb Of God , Static Lullaby ). Tenatively
titled Staring Back , the release will be a double-disc containing all
of the band's recordings including the three brand new songs, and
b-sides.
In the meantime, the band is dusted themselves off with some rare live
appearances overseas (dates below) with expectations to do a reunion
show in support of the retrospective release this spring.

soon with more info in regards to the band.

CRAZIEST FUCKING DREAM I EVER HAD
OK, this is a dream I had this morning...I have very intense, lucid
dreams anyway....but this one....holy shit!
It started off some men in a pickup truck pulled into my parking lot,
there is an old store building next door my dad owns. I asked them
what was up. They said they wanted their money for the store.
I told them it wasn't their property. One bald guy that had a thick
Italian accent and kept saying this was their property and they
wanted their money, now.
I started fighting with the men and one drew a gun.
I jumped up and kicked him in the head and knocked him out.
The other two guys had gasoline and were pouring it all in the store.
I ran in and beat the other two with my fists, then took the gas can
and poured gas all over them. Then drug them out into the parking lot
so when I lit the gas it wouldn't catch into the building.
I was looking for something, a match or lighter to strike off the gas
when my sister shows up with her cell phone asking what the hell was
happenng. I told her to call 911, she said no answer. So I got the
phone from her and dialed it myself. I told the dispatcher what was
happening and she said remain calm the police were already on the way.
At that momnet, an unmarked car showed up along with a regular police
car and they were from Walker county, another county a long way from
here. A detective got out of the unmarked and very calmly asked
"what's the problem sir" I told him. He reached into his pocket and
got out some paper. He said it was a warrant to search the property.
That they wanted their clothes back. Earlier in the night I had had a
dream I was working at K-mart and was buying all the killer clothes
there with my paycheck.
So I tossed the phone to my sister and said to call my Dad. The police
started to grab her and she threw it back to me, they then took her
inside my house, where I heard her screaming and they started trashing
my house. I tried to call my dad but the operator came on and said
the number wasn't working anymore.
I then tried to call my bass player to tell him to get his ass up
here to check shit out. I screamed "Dude, what the hell is going on?
The cops are here saying they want their clothes back" He
calmly said they wanted their camera back and the clothes.
I said "What the fuck are you talking about!?"
He calmly said "Remember that super-glue you were putting on yer
mule?" I said yeah. He said " Well, Renee (his old lady) showed
up at his house and said I wasn't supposed to see that, it was
classified." I was yelling "What the hell is going on, what are
you talking about?" About that time another unmarked cop car
showed up. I ran around to the window, and started yelling.
It had tinted windows and the cop rolled his down and said he was
eating his lunch. He then put a gun in my face. Then, another
cop car pulled up, a K-9 unit, and they let the dog out on me.
The german shepard jumped up and I caught him with my right hand
in the throat and slammed hm into the ground (yes it was a him,
he had a weiner). With one hand holding the cell phone, my left,
with my right hand I was beating the dog in the head on the
ground yelling at my bass player on the cell phone "Kilgore, you
caused this shit!" he was repeating "sorry dude, shit happens."
At that moment a helicopter was hovering overhead, it was a news
camera crew and it had a woman with headphones speaking into a
microphone. She had no shirt on and had huge breasts (the only
sane part of the dream, I see huge breasts all the time).
At that moment, the real phone rang in my house and it was my

Sweet Cobra
Praise
(Seventh Rule Recordings)
While Sweet Cobra may unintentionally invoke images of muscle cars
or adult film stars, this Chicago-based outfit is all about the rock:
sweaty, grimy, fist-core derived from former members of Suicide Note,
The Hope Conspiracy and The Killing Tree. Their debut album, Praise,
really doesn´t reach its stride until three songs into the thick of
things. The first two songs—“Torn Knees” and “Ruins”—sound too samey
like Unsane until “Leviathan” is unleashed: heavy-handed hardcore with
drummer Jason Gagovski showing his expertise in precision pummeling.
“Content With The Tide” has traces of old Helmet, but this reference
doesn´t fully come into focus until “Bandicoot” begins. Starting out
like AmRep-era Helmet with its relentless riffs, this cut even travels
up through time to Page Hamilton and co. circa Meantime in
the guitar breaks, and singer/bassist Botchy Vasquez screams his head
off for the duration—until the song fades out at 2:10 for twenty
creeping seconds of silence. After a moody acoustic intro mixing
Pantera´s cover of Sabbath´s “Planet Caravan” with Pink Floyd´s Animals,
“River Of Crimson” pounds out doomy chordage like Transmission0 covering
My Dying Bride, then flows into more deliberate Isis worship. “Hatchet
Wound” flirts with Cutthroats9, while “Fear No Feather” begins quite
gothily with violins, picked harp, female vocals, and an oscillating
helicopter throbbing in the background. As the guitars and drums kick
in, the tune takes on a more Amber Asylum-ish quality. Whether they´re
playing riotous AmRep-core or Neurot-styled neo-noise, Sweet Cobra
invite the curious to peel away the onion-like layers of Praise.
